The Lanterns Mentoring Program provides a wonderful opportunity for adults in our community to volunteer their time to make a difference in the lives of young people. Mentors meet with students one hour per week during school hours at Andover Elementary, Hebron Elementary, Elmer Thienes Elementary School, as well as RHAM schools. During this time, the mentor and student can eat lunch, talk, play games, and do crafts or other activities. If you are interested in this rewarding program, please complete the Lanterns Mentor Application. As a Mentor, you will be trained in areas such as communication, session strategies, and confidentiality. Mentoring has been shown to be extremely effective in helping children to stay out of trouble and have positive life outcomes. Studies have shown that youth who are matched with a mentor demonstrate improved academic performance, improved peer/family relationships, increased communication skills, decreased drug abuse, and improved school attendance. If you have further questions, please contact our Program Coordinator, Laurie Larsen at (860) 228-0871 or via email at lanternsmentoring@yahoo.com. |

One of the goals of the Youth Services Bureau is to provide positive opportunities for young people to explore the creative abilities within themselves. Each year, the AHM Summer Youth Theater comes alive with the exciting sounds of a Broadway musical. These sold-out performances require the talents of a theatrical staff, volunteers, young cast, and stage crew. The summer youth theater is by far one of the popular summer activities for young people throughout the region and is an annual tradition for many local patrons of the arts. The AHM Summer Youth Theater began in 1983 and is the longest running program offered by the regional youth service bureau. Each year, students from Hebron, Andover, and Marlborough, seven through twelve, spend six weeks of summer evenings preparing and performing a full length musical. Past shows include: Guys and Dolls, Mulan, Peter Pan, Once Upon a Mattress, Cinderella, Meet Me in St. Louis, My Fair Lady, Oliver, The Wizard of Oz, Bye Bye Birdie, Li’l Abner, Godspell, Damn Yankees, and State Fair.

The AHM Summer Jazz Camp is designed to create a relaxed and fun workshop environment where students can explore improvisation in the blues and jazz genres. Students are encouraged to be creative in an open atmosphere and will learn to solo. Ensemble techniques will also be reinforced. Each musician should have basic music skills, including being able to read and play on their chosen instrument. This summer Jazz for Juniors Music Camp will takes place in two sessions. The first session will be for students in grades 7-10 and the second session will be for students in grades 5-7. The overlap between the two sessions for the placement of students in grades 7 will be determined by Mr. Dominic Marino, the music camp director. Participants are responsible for their own instrument and supplies. Don’t hesitate to sign-up if you are interested, the number of participants determines whether to not this camp will be held.
